In February, the House of Representatives passed two bills to require background checks on all private gun sales and increase the amount of time required to process a background check — neither of which Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell brought to the floor of the Senate for a vote.
LaPierre's claim that Trump supporters aren't in favor of background checks is not, however, backed up by recent polling data, which shows overwhelming support for universal background checks across the political spectrum.
According to a Morning Consult/Politico poll released on August 7, 90% of Republicans and Trump 2016 voters and 89% of those who currently hold a favorable view of Trump support mandatory background checks on all gun sales.
Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia are similarly teaming up on a Senate bill to expand background checks to virtually all private sales, and both told the Post they had spoken to Trump in recent days making the case for the bill — which the NRA does not support.
Manchin said that any legislation expanding background checks would need Trump's support to have a fighting chance on Capitol Hill, telling the Post that he expressed to Trump that "if you don't stand up and say, 'This is a piece of legislation I support,' we're not going to get enough cover to have Republicans stand tall. They won't be able to do it."
The Post also reported that Trump is questioning whether the NRA — which has had a huge influence over Republican lawmakers for decades but is currently weathering a number of financial and legal scandals — still holds the same level of sway within the GOP.
After the mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida, the Trump administration similarly defied the NRA by banning bump stocks — devices that allow shooters to fire multiple rounds more quickly.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of Trump's allies on the hill, told the Post he's optimistic that Trump "seems determined to do something and believes there is space to get something done this time around," adding, "he's never been a sports or gun enthusiast. But he is more determined than ever to do something on his watch."

NBC executives have said the reason they replaced 62-year-old Jay Leno with 38-year-old Jimmy Fallon as host of the Tonight Show in 2014 was to attract younger viewers.
But the ratings in the 18 to 49 category at the time showed Leno dominating his time slot among the coveted group.
So what was that the real reason Leno was let go?
Here’s one theory circulating online backed only by circumstantial evidence: Hollywood executives familiar with the machinations of late night TV believe that the Obama White House pressured NBC to replace Leno because the comedian was lampooning President Barack Obama on a near-nightly basis.
Leno went after the fact that the First Family spend hundreds of millions on vacations during a recession, that Michelle Obama’s unpopular school food program was a disaster, and the rollout of Obamacare was a mess.
“NBC couldn’t stomach the fact that Leno’s jokes about Obama were always right on target about the first black president… And left-leaning Democrat executives at NBC were being harassed by Obama himself who thought the comedy was a racist attack on him,” a netizen observed.
Newsweek in a July 2013 report noted the irony of replacing Leno when his ratings were through the roof.
“Leno has never been more dominant: the Nielsen ratings for the second week in July have him beating CBS’s David Letterman by a 43 percent margin in the all-important ‘viewers 18 to 49’ category (on which advertising rates are set) and swamping ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel by a crushing 75 percent. The ‘total viewers’ number is a similar story, with Leno delivering 3.3 million compared with Letterman’s 2.6 million and Kimmel’s 2 million. Don Ohlmeyer, who as president of NBC’s West Coast operations in the mid-1990s helped guide Leno to victory over Letterman, said NBC’s explanation for replacing Leno was “bullshit. I’m sure Jay says that to everybody who asks him, but for the Jay that I know, his heart has to be breaking about this. All he wanted to do in his life was The Tonight Show. And instead of going out the way Johnny Carson went out, he’s going out having to make self-deprecating jokes about being fired.”

In the first defense white paper it has released in several years, China identifies the United States as its main adversary, warns that it is set to use military force against Taiwan and says that developing space weapons is among its vital strategic interests.
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) white paper — part policy statement and part propaganda — was released on July 24.
The paper claims the United States seeks “absolute military superiority” and is undermining world peace.
“The U.S. has adjusted its national security and defense strategies, and adopted unilateral policies,” the white paper said. “It has provoked and intensified competition among major countries, significantly increased its defense expenditure, pushed for additional capacity in nuclear, outer space, cyber and missile defense, and undermined global strategic stability.”
The white paper warns that China is prepared to use military force against Taiwan if the self-ruled island seeks formal independence.
Taiwan is a quasi-U.S. ally and the United States is obligated under the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act to defend it from mainland attack.
On space warfare, the PLA report states that threats to space “loom large” and as a result space security is now among eight vital Chinese strategic interests.
Steve Lambakis, a former official at the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency, said a key PLA objective is to use space weapons to cripple operations of the Hawaii-based Indo-Pacific Command during a future conflict by attacking American satellites, according to a report by security correspondent Bill Gertz for Washington Free Beacon.
“These operations would likely start with disruption and destruction of [command, control, communications, and intelligence] capabilities with cyber and kinetic attacks on satellites and ground assets in support of other Chinese kinetic capabilities,” Lambakis said.
Beijing, in another threatening announcement, said last week the PLA is prepared to dispatch forces to Hong Kong, which has been rocked by anti-Beijing protests in recent weeks.
The white paper also stresses “safeguarding national political security” — a reference to the PLA’s ultimate mission of keeping the ruling Communist Party of China in power.
The U.S. government went hard after a former member of Congress who exposed “many instances of high-level corruption by Obama officials,” including disgraced IRS official Lois Lerner.
Former Rep. Steve Stockman, Texas Republican, is currently serving a 10-year federal prison sentence after what the government’s own key witness against him said was a “show trial — a real-life, Soviet-style prosecution.”
Stockman “boldly led the charge that eventually resulted in Ms. Lerner admitting her abuse of power, being held in contempt of Congress and being ousted her from her post,” Rebecca Hagelin wrote in an Aug. 4 analysis for The Washington Times.
“But while Ms. Lerner now lives as a free woman, even though she and her crooked government buddies enacted revenge on Stockman, who now is languishing in a federal prison under a 10-year sentence.”
The case against Stockman, Hagelin wrote, “involves the supposed tricking of nonprofit donors, based on four checks and two donors. It took twice as long as the Trump investigation, four grand juries, the pressuring of witnesses and millions of dollars to convict the former legislator.”
The nonprofit donors in Stockman’s case never complained or contacted the government, Hagelin noted. “Rather, the DOJ sought them out. The government’s own key FBI witness, Ben Wetmore, called it a ‘show trial — a real-life, Soviet-style prosecution.’ ”
An FBI witness testified at Stockman’s trial that an agent was brought onto the FBI team to investigate the congressman the same month Stockman appeared on Fox News calling for Lerner’s arrest.
“The government organizations and people on whom Stockman blew the whistle are the very ones who tried and secured his conviction — the FBI, DOJ and IRS,” Hagelin wrote.
“So disturbing was the prosecution of the congressman that dozens of high-profile conservatives are ringing the bell in a ‘friend of the court,’ or amicus, brief filed last week in Stockman’s case. The previous amicus brief filed in early June and the new one pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, where Stockman’s case now resides, lay out a shocking scheme to silence Stockman and keep him locked up.”
Mark Fitzgibbons, a fundraising law expert at political direct mail pioneer Richard Viguerie’s American Target Advertising agency, who wrote the amicus brief for Stockman’s appeal, said “the Government’s prosecution of Steve is very disturbing on so many levels, from its incorrect legal arguments about nonprofit expenditures in the political arena to contorting innocent acts by Steve to appear suspicious. No Democrat would have been prosecuted this way.”
The matters for which Stockman was criminally prosecuted “usually would have been addressed through administrative hearings with civil fines as the worst penalties,” Hagelin wrote. “But Stockman — whose appeal makes a strong case for his innocence — was put away for a decade. The amicus brief and scores of conservative leaders are calling on the courts or the president to correct this egregious wrong.”
The 2018 criminal trial of Stockman “has laid bare the underbelly of political targeting by the Obama administration’s Department of Justice,” Hagelin wrote.
“The gutsy former Texas congressman undid much of President Barack Obama’s agenda when he blocked, via a ‘blue slip,’ the president’s signature legislative priorities — the immigration and gun control bills — effectively keeping the Senate from sending the bills to the House for a vote.”
Stockman also introduced a bill calling for U.S. Capitol Police to arrest Lerner for destroying government emails and for obstruction of justice.
“Steve Stockman is an American hero who had the guts to expose corruption at the highest levels,” Hagelin wrote. “If the abuses of power that now leave him shackled are not investigated and prosecuted, then who will ever dare question the leftist power mongers in the future?
“If his conviction is not overturned or pardoned, then Mr. Obama, Ms. Lerner and the liberal cronies who walked free from their own crimes will have succeeded in crushing a good man who fought to hold them accountable.”

Went on about a 13 year old watching his family member being taken. Maybe this will teach him breaking the law doesn't pay. How long this has been going on who knows and how many legal Americans tried to get a job there in the past but were told they had no openings. Years ago, it was hard to be a racist. You had to be fitted for and spend money on a white gown and don a pointy hat. You celebrated racism by getting some burlap, wrapping it around a cross, setting it ablaze and dancing around it carrying torches. Sometimes, as did Lester Maddox, you had to buy axe handles for yourself and your supporters to wield to forcibly turn away black customers from your restaurant. Or, as in the case of Theophilus “Bull” Connor, you had to learn to direct fire hoses and vicious police attack dogs against civil rights demonstrators.
Younger racists, along with their parents, had to memorize poems for whenever a black student showed up for admission to their high school or college. For example, “Two, four, six, eight, we don’t want to integrate!” Of course, there were a host of racial slurs and epithets that could be hurled, with impunity, at any black person in your presence. In earlier times, you didn’t have to be sophisticated, but it took a bit of work, to be a racist.
Today, all that has changed. To be a racist today takes little effort. For example, one can sit back in his easy chair and declare that he’s for across-the-board tax cuts. That makes you a racist. If you don’t believe me, think back to 1994 when the Republican-led
Congress pushed for a tax-cut measure. Former U.S. House of Representatives member Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., denounced the Republicans’ plan before a Manhattan audience as a form of modern-day racism. A few months later, he compared the GOP’s “Contract with America” to measures in Nazi Germany saying, “Hitler wasn’t even talking about doing these things.”
One can be labeled a racist through a set of “microaggressions” listed in “Diversity in the Classroom, UCLA Diversity & Faculty Development” from 2014.
Here are a few statements one should avoid: “You are a credit to your race.” “Wow! How did you become so good in math?” “There is only one race, the human race.” “I’m not racist. I have several Black friends.” “As a woman, I know what you go through as a racial minority.”
But most instances of microaggressions are less overt. There are college micro-aggressions such as a male student rolling his eyes when a female student speaks, or people not wanting to be in study groups with those of different races.
Perhaps the easiest way to be labeled a racist is to suggest that a wall be built on our border with Mexico in order to keep people from Mexico and points south from entering our nation illegally. Also, a slam-dunk charge of racism is to say that the standard practice of separating children from parents is Nazi-like. But imagine you are stopped with your child in the car and charged with a DUI. You’re going to be arrested and your child taken to protective child services.
As veteran journalist Brit Hume said about the uproar over President Donald Trump’s latest bomb-throwing: “Trump’s ‘go back’ comments were nativist, xenophobic, counterfactual and politically stupid. But they simply do not meet the standard definition of racist, a word so recklessly flung around these days that its actual meaning is being lost.” The president cleaned up his remarks a few days later saying: “These are people that hate our country. If you’re not happy in the U.S., if you’re complaining all the time, very simply, you can leave.” By the way, leaving isn’t Trump’s idea. Many leftists pledged to flee America altogether if Trump were elected president.
The bottom line is that when leftists have no other winning argument, they falsely accuse others of racism. Republicans cower at the charge and often give the leftists what they want. Black Americans who are octogenarians, or nearly so, need to explain what true racism is to inform young black people.

The Democrats and Republicans are BOTH guilty of using mass shootings for political gain and that has become sick. BOTH parties are guilty of this and it is NOT the presidents fault. Below is an example of this crap from when Obama was president and as much as I disliked him it was not his fault.
An Ohio Republican state lawmaker on Sunday blamed mass shootings in the US on former President Barack Obama, "fatherlessness," video games and "drag queen advocates" following two shootings this weekend in Texas and Ohio that left more than 30 dead. The state's Republican Party is now calling for her resignation. We have already heard the liberals run their collective mouths blaming Trump for this and as shown above, it is NOT his fault. It was not Obamas fault when it happened under his watch anymore then Trumps. I am not the smartest person but I believe it has to do with many reasons and one is the lack of a stable family life. Both parents work, little to no supervision of children as I learned from parents/grandparents how to act, what was right/wrong and how to interact with others. Now we allow our children to learn from TV, computers, and god knows what. The shooter in Ohio had red flags and no one did or said anything. He has a list of people he wanted to kill, girls to rape and no one said a damn thing. I remember a time when I did something wrong and my parents knew as others spoke up and let them know. I don't agree Video Games has anything to do with this other than show how to kill. Growing up we all had shows that showed killing but those that did were punished or executed for doing so. Now they go to prison many times they get out and repeat. Those that kill and there is no doubt about it such as now are NOT SUSPECTS. This crap needs to stop and if there is no doubt call them what they are. This clown in Texas is NOT a SUSPECT, but a coward who murdered innocent people and should be removed from the living in short order. Sometimes I wonder if I was on a jury could I vote for the death penalty as I don't know if I have the moral authority to do so. I then think of what that person did and I think they have lost their right to be here. Hard decision to make but we must finds ways to stop the killing. It is not the guns, video games, or not being nursed as a child. The breakdown of the family unit I think is the main problem now. Children raise themselves and this must cease.
Kids don't know HOW to raise themselves, take the responsibility PARENTS as you may be the biggest problem.
