Basketball superstar Charles Barkley called pushing for the removal of Confederate statues "wasted energy."
"I'm not going to waste my time screaming at a neo-Nazi who's gonna hate me no matter what," the NBA Hall of Famer told WRBC-TV in Birmingham, Alabama.
“I’m 54 years old,” Barkley said. “I’ve never thought about those statues a day in my life. I think if you ask most black people, to be honest, they ain’t thought a day in their life about those stupid statues.”
Barkley has not minced words when pointing out what he sees as his black community's problems, such as last year when he spoke about violence against cops.
Political commentator and former Congressional Black Caucus director Angela Rye demanded that all memorials and likenesses of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Robert E. Lee be taken down.
Rye said on CNN that there is a "problem" in how many people are taught American history in school.
"George Washington was a slaveowner. Whether we think they were protecting American freedom or not, he wasn't protecting my freedom," Rye said.
The Staff: Barkley is probably correct as most of us look and really never stop to think about what took place unless we remember our history classes. Since they no longer teach ACCURATE American History, some may not know anything.
Ray, that is another story as she was not alive when Washington was alive to protect her. Washington was not protecting American Freedom but FIGHTING FOR IT. Remember, many many BLACK Africans sold their own into slavery so you may wish to mention that somewhere.
